New Signal Caller: A's Make KTRB-AM Flagship Station For '09

A's Ink Deal For KTRB To
Become New Radio Flagship Station
The A's yesterday signed a one-year deal with KTRB-AM to broadcast all 162 of the team's regular-season games and 17 Spring Training games, according to Joe Stiglich of the OAKLAND TRIBUNE. KTRB is a 50,000-watt station and gives the club a flagship "with a stronger signal than [KYCY-AM], the A's previous radio home." The station also broadcasts Stanford football and basketball, but "otherwise sticks to a syndicated talk format." A's VP/Broadcasting & Communications Ken Pries: "It's a good strong AM signal. Right now it doesn't have the sports programming we would like around it. ... Down the road their plans are to do more sports." Stiglich reports while the deal is just for '09, both sides have indicated that they "would like to extend the partnership beyond" just one season. The A's radio broadcast team of Ken Korach and Vince Cotroneo "will remain intact," while A's announcer Ray Fosse "will continue to join them for non-televised games." Robert Buan will remain as postgame host. It is "unknown is how much KTRB might supplement broadcasts with more A's-related programming." Meanwhile, Stiglich notes the A's are "still negotiating to switch their television rights" from CSN Bay Area to Sacramento-based CSN California (OAKLAND TRIBUNE, 1/6). In San Jose, John Ryan notes it will be "interesting to see how this move [to KTRB] plays out in the South Bay, the focus of the team's future marketing efforts" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 1/6). In S.F., Susan Slusser reports the A's hope to "have an announcement about the TV package by the end of the month." A move to CSN California would "put the team's games on a double-digit channel on the Bay Area system" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 1/6).
