NLL To Virally Broadcast Live Games Hoping To Reach Young Fans

The National Lacrosse League this afternoon will announce the launch of the NLL Network, an online collection of 13 channels streamed online at NLL.com, and this season will become the first pro sports league to virally broadcast live games, according to league officials. With the free service, which allows fans to watch multiple games simultaneously, users can embed one of the 13 channels -- 12 team channels plus a league channel -- as well as the NLL Net video player, onto individual MySpace, Facebook or other social networking Web site pages. The viral integration allows users, as well as visitors to the user's social networking page, to view the channel without having to visit the league's site. NLL sponsors Reebok and Sirius XM, as well as other league partners, receive exposure on the NLL Network during game broadcasts through commercial broadcasts, as well as overlay ads during the broadcasts and live reads from the announcers. The video feeds originate exclusively for the NLL Network, and each channel also has broadcasting crews providing live play-by-play commentary. The NLL has selected Mogulus Pro to launch the network and power the live streaming.

REACHING FOR THE FANS: The NLL, now in its 23rd season, is hoping the viral integration will help expand the league's fan base, said Deputy Commissioner George Daniel. "We've got a young demographic," Daniel said. "As numbers and ratings are showing, fewer people are watching television. We think this is an important place for us to be. ... We're not under some of the major TV contracts that some of the bigger leagues are, so it allows us to play in this space and be a little more flexible and try new things. We want to be on the cutting edge." The NLL plans to support this effort with in-arena and online advertising. "This allows us to control our content for the future," Daniel said. "We're laying a platform that we think is going to grow long term. ... We think for our league and for our demographic, this is the best place to reach them, and for our sponsors, to deliver their message."
