Robinson Returns To Bay Area
To Call 49ers Games On Radio |
The 49ers yesterday named Ted Robinson as radio play-by-play announcer, replacing Joe Starkey, who retired at the end of the regular season, according to Daniel Brown of the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS. Robinson previously called games for the MLB Giants for nine seasons, as well as serving as an announcer for the A's, Warriors and Stanford Univ. football, and 49ers COO Andy Dolich said Robinson is "local, local, local. He knows the Bay Area as well as anybody." Robinson will team with analyst Gary Plummer, who enters his 12th season with the 49ers (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 1/6). Robinson said of the 49ers position, "It's the most prestigious job you could ask for. ... The 49ers are the greatest brand name in Bay Area sports." In S.F., Ron Kroichick reports Robinson, who last season served as a studio host for Versus' college football coverage, has agreed to drop that assignment, though he will "continue his work on college basketball and tennis, sports presenting fewer conflicts with the NFL season." Kroichick writes, "For a broadcaster who carved out a handsome niche partly on his versatility, Robinson will confront a fresh challenge: specializing in the NFL, a league in which he owns modest experience, for the last half of every year" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 1/6). Robinson, who also covered the Beijing Olympics this past summer, said that his "sole focus from July until the end of the football season will be on the 49ers" (Santa Rosa PRESS DEMOCRAT, 1/6). In California, Cam Inman writes Robinson's appointment gives the 49ers "not only a well-respected speaker of the house," but his "vocabulary always astounds me" (CONTRA COSTA TIMES, 1/6).
