UM Fans Accessed Wheelchair Seating More In '08 Than Ever Before

UM Will Have 329 Wheelchair Seats Available
After Michigan Stadium Renovation Is Complete
More Univ. of Michigan (UM) fans accessed wheelchair seating at Michigan Stadium during the '08 football season "than ever before," according to Marisa Schultz of the DETROIT NEWS. UM increased the number of wheelchair seats in the stadium from 81 in the end zones in '07 to 184 in '08 "with the addition of new sideline seating, as part of a legal agreement that ended a federal lawsuit." The U.S. Department of Justice and the Michigan Paralyzed Veterans of America sued UM in '07, "claiming Michigan Stadium failed to offer enough wheelchair seating as required under federal law." Figures released by UM in a legal filing in December indicated that throughout the '08 football season, occupancy rates of the 184 wheelchair seats ranged from a low of 74% at the November 15 game against Northwestern Univ. to a high of 89% for the September 27 game against the Univ. of Wisconsin. Schultz notes "less than half of the 184 wheelchair seats were sold in advance as season tickets; the rest were sold or exchanged on game day." When the renovation of Michigan Stadium is complete by the fall of 2010, total wheelchair seats will reach 329 (DETROIT NEWS, 1/6).
