Huizenga Says Parcells Will Stay; Could Peterson Join Him?

Huizenga Says Parcells Will Stay With
Dolphins After Transfer Of Ownership
Dolphins co-Owner Wayne Huizenga yesterday said Dolphins Exec VP/Football Operations Bill Parcells is "going to stay" with the club despite speculation he might opt out of his contract and go to another team amid Huizenga's impending sale of 95% of the team to Dolphins co-Owner Stephen Ross, according to Dave Hyde of the South Florida SUN-SENTINEL. Huizenga: "He told me (Friday) he's going to stay." Huizenga added that he "wasn't sure when the sale would be finalized." Huizenga: "I'm not sure what we're going to end up working out. We're going to go meet right now" (South Florida SUN-SENTINEL, 1/5). More Huizenga: "I talked to Bill a couple days ago and he said, 'Hey, I like it here.' So that's all I can say" (PALM BEACH POST, 1/5). CBS’ Charley Casserly added after Ross "takes over in February, if he wants Bill Parcells back, my best guess is that Bill Parcells will return. He really enjoys the job that he has in Miami" ("The NFL Today," CBS, 1/4). But in N.Y., Harvey Araton writes Parcells "recognizes how much of a crapshoot the NFL can be season to season, and not to count on a competitive progression." Araton: "Once again, a franchise hangs on his future, on the loophole in a deal a desperate Huizenga signed on to last year" (N.Y. TIMES, 1/5).

CROWDED BACKFIELD? NFL Network’s Adam Schefter cited sources as saying that "one day, possibly sooner rather than later, Ross will hire (former Chiefs President, GM & CEO Carl) Peterson to help run his Dolphins franchise.” Peterson was the President & GM of the USFL Philadelphia Stars, which was owned by Ross, and the two "have remained close." Schefter: "Some in the Chiefs organization have maintained all along that Ross would provide Peterson with his golden parachute out of Kansas City, with Peterson not the type of individual to simply walk away from the game" (“NFL Gameday Morning,” NFL Network, 1/4). PRO FOOTBALL TALK's Josh Alper wrote Peterson signing with the Dolphins could "increase the likelihood that [Parcells] takes his money and runs." Alper: "If Parcells stays, Ross could hire Peterson in another capacity and create a situation where Parcells has less decision-making power" (PROFOOTBALLTALK.com, 1/4). But SI.com's Peter King writes Parcells and Peterson "together in Miami -- Peterson is a favorite of new Miami owner Steve Ross -- is more of an odd couple than Felix and Oscar. If that ever happens, I'm buying at Starbucks. For the world. Now that we know Parcells is going to stay in Miami, Peterson's going to have to look elsewhere" (SI.com, 1/5).
