NHL Franchise Notes: Blackhawks Gear Growing More Popular

Blackhawks Expected To Be Among Top Five
Teams In Apparel Sales In NHL's Latest Report
NHL Exec VP/Marketing Brian Jennings said that he "expected the Blackhawks to be among the top five clubs in apparel sales in the league's latest quarterly report." In addition, WinCraft President & COO John Killen, whose company manufactures all NHL-licensed goods except apparel, said that sales of Blackhawks merchandise has increased by 136% from last year and by 540% since '04-05. Killen added that the Blackhawks rank 12th among the NHL's 30 teams, up from 18th last season (N.Y. TIMES, 1/4). On Long Island, Mark Herrmann noted the Blackhawks are averaging 22,686 fans per game at the United Center, tops in the NHL, up 66.7% from the team's average attendance of 13,612 at the same point last season (NEWSDAY, 1/4).

CHECKS & BALANCES: In N.Y., Larry Brooks reported the Coyotes, "in severe financial distress and receiving funds from the NHL, cannot make a player move without approval from the league office." NHL Commissioner Bill Daly said in an e-mail, "The Club has agreed to consult with us in connection with all significant financial transactions, including those relating to players" (N.Y. POST, 1/4). Meanwhile, Blues Owner Dave Checketts in an interview on KMOX-AM said of the team's financial state, "The franchise is in very good health, and while we are going to miss our original projections, it will only be slightly, and then we'll have to see what 2009 brings" (ST. LOUIS-POST DISPATCH, 1/3).

Messier, Who Retired In '04,
Wants To Get Back Into Hockey
ON YOUR MARK...: The N.Y. POST's Brooks writes Hockey HOFer Mark Messier, who retired from the NHL in '04, is "on the outside looking in while contemporaries" including Coyotes Managing Partner & coach Wayne Gretzky, Red Wings VP Steve Yzerman, Hurricanes Assistant GM Ron Francis and Blues VP/Hockey Operations Al MacInnis are "making their marks in organizations around the league." Messier: "My feeling was to take three or four years to spend with the kids and my family, but I'm ready to get back in the game. Hopefully there will be a position that's a good fit for me." Brooks noted Messier "certainly would prefer to get to work for the Rangers," and Rangers GM Glen Sather should "make the call that will bring Messier into the organization." The team "need[s] him," and Messier is a "far more valuable presence than his banner" (N.Y. POST, 1/4).
