DirecTV Subscribers May Miss Remaining
Jazz Games On KJZZ Unless Deal Is Reached |
The Jazz have detailed their dispute with DirecTV over carriage of KJZZ-Ind in a mass e-mail to season-ticket holders, ending the message with DirecTV's 800 number "so that fans may complain," according to Ben Fulton of the SALT LAKE TRIBUNE. DirecTV "stopped transmitting KJZZ to its subscribers" Wednesday, and the team in the e-mail said that fans "must either switch to another cable or satellite provider, or pick up the channel's signal via home antenna if they want to view" the 12 remaining Jazz games scheduled to air on the net this season. The e-mail states, "KJZZ has requested that DirecTV pay a similar and fair [fee] to what they pay to other Salt Lake stations, but they have refused to do so." Fulton noted the dispute suggests that DirecTV subscribers "will not receive [KJZZ] for at least a year unless a settlement is reached" (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 1/3). In Utah, Tim Buckley reported the dispute means "none of the station's programming ... is currently available to DirecTV customers." DirecTV Dir of PR Robert Mercer Friday in a statement said of KJZZ, "Historically, the channel has made its signal available to DirecTV at no charge and is also free over the air. Now KJZZ is requesting a significant fee for its programming and in this extremely difficult economic climate, these demands represent a potential burden on our customers." Buckley noted KJZZ is "seeking a deal similar to one it currently has" with Dish Network, but DirecTV "doesn't want to pay because it doesn't typically buy programming from local over-the-air stations that do not have national network affiliation." KJZZ GM Chris Baum Friday said DirecTV has "never responded to us with any counteroffer at all." Baum: "I'm hopeful they're willing to negotiate, but we just can't continue under current terms" (DESERET NEWS, 1/3).
