Cowboys' New Stadium May Host '11 Pro Bowl Before Super Bowl XLV

NFL Says It Has No Timeline For Selecting
A Location For The 2011 Pro Bowl
Arlington Mayor Robert Cluck said that he is 90% "sure the 2011 NFL Pro Bowl will be played" at the Cowboys' new stadium, just a week before the facility hosts Super Bowl XLV, according to Jeff Mosier of the DALLAS MORNING NEWS. Cluck said of the Pro Bowl, "We have information that suggests that we'll get it in '11. I think I have good reason" to believe that. NFL VP/Corporate Communications Brian McCarthy said that the NFL "wasn't willing to commit to any site yet for the 2011 Pro Bowl." McCarthy said that "all options are still being considered, and there's no timeline for selecting a location." McCarthy added that it is possible a decision "could be made after seeing how well the South Florida Pro Bowl fares" in '10 at Dolphin Stadium. Cowboys Dir of Corporate Communications Brett Daniels said that he "didn't know how soon the NFL would decide on future Pro Bowl games or whether league officials were leaning toward having one in Arlington." Meanwhile, Russell Pang, a spokesperson for Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle, said that he "believes the NFL is open to returning to Aloha Stadium after moving the game to South Florida for a year." Pang said that he "doesn't believe that NFL officials have made up their minds" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 1/3). But Cluck added of the NFL hosting the game in Arlington, "I think they are indeed planning to have a Pro Bowl here in 2011, one or two weeks before the Super Bowl. I think they are trying to boost interest in it. I can't imagine it not coming here" (FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 1/3).

FALLING STAR: In N.Y., Gary Myers wrote, "Moving the Pro Bowl next year to Miami, the Super Bowl city, on the Sunday before the Super Bowl, is a good idea." But while the Pro Bowl "will create more media attention," it still will be a "lousy game." Myers: "All-Star games just don't work in pro football. What the league should do is have a big banquet to honor the Pro Bowl players, show highlight clips, have some singers and comedians to provide entertainment, present MVP awards, etc. But the game doesn't work no matter where it is played" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 1/4).
