Petty Enterprises To Close Doors, Merge With Gillett Evernham

Petty Enterprises will “shut its doors and merge” with Gillett Evernham Motorsports (GEM), according to sources cited by Lee Spencer of FOXSPORTS.com. Petty's No. 43 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Dodge “will become part of the Gillett stable with Reed Sorenson expected to be behind the wheel.” Most of Petty's remaining 39 employees were expected to “conclude their duties” on Wednesday. Petty VP/Race Operations Robbie Loomis is “expected to assume a managerial role under the new partnership, which will likely be rebranded under the Petty banner.” David Zucker, who was named Petty CEO after private equity firm Boston Ventures purchased a controlling interest in June, is “expected to be reassigned to the Petty Driving Experience” (FOXSPORTS.com, 12/31). SPORTING NEWS’s Reid Spencer noted the merged teams are expected to field three full-time Sprint Cup Series cars in ’09 -- the No. 9 Dodge driven by Kasey Kahne, the No. 19 Dodge driven by A.J. Allmendinger (he replaces Elliott Sadler) and Sorenson's No. 43 entry (SPORTING NEWS TODAY, 1/1). In Charlotte, David Poole reported it appears Petty Chair Emeritus Richard Petty “will have an ownership piece along with [GEM Owner] George Gillett in the merged company.” It is “not clear how many current Petty employees will move to the new team” (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 1/1).
