This Week's Newsmakers: Cris Carter Shot Down For T.O. Comments

THE DAILY each Friday offers our take on the performances over the past week of people and entities in sports business. Here are this week’s newsmakers:

WIN: MLB NETWORK -- It only launched Thursday, but just the fact that MLB Net launches on time and so smoothly considering it had a small window is a credit to MLB, TIM BROSNAN and TONY PETITTI. There are very few, if any, hiccups during the ramp up, and the net seemingly has a good mix of talent, studios brimming with the latest technology and smart programming generating buzz. Pretty good start.

Carter Chastised For Bullet Remarks
Regarding Terrell Owens
LOSE: CRIS CARTER -- We likely could have included fellow broadcaster CHARLES BARKLEY here, but Carter’s remark last week was just so ridiculous, we could not let it slide. The usually smooth Carter said of TERRELL OWENS’ future with the Cowboys: “I take one bullet and put it right in him. Bam!” Can anyone figure out why he would ever utter such a stupid comment? It is mind-boggling. Carter quickly went on ESPN’s outlets to apologize, but the net was lucky, as the remark came during a slow holiday week, preventing it from getting the scrutiny it deserved.

DRAW: PRO BOWL -- We like the announcement of moving the ‘10 game to the week before the Super Bowl and playing it in the same market as the Super Bowl. The rest of the story has yet to be told, as many questions remain about future sites and the game rotation. In addition, moving the ’10 game to ESPN rather than staying with game broadcaster CBS raised more questions than answers and left a whole ‘half-baked’ feel to the plan.
