Sources Say NBC Officials May Be Quietly
Pulling For Giants-Steelers Super Bowl
In N.Y., Don Kaplan notes the absence of the Cowboys, Jets and Patriots from the NFL playoffs "could mean less-than-stellar ratings for Fox, NBC and CBS." But "even more troubling" for NBC, broadcaster of Super Bowl XLIII, is the "possibility of a championship game between the Carolina Panthers and the Tennessee Titans, two talented small-market teams with small national followings." Network sources said that NBC officials "may be quietly pulling" for a Steelers-Giants Super Bowl matchup (N.Y. POST, 12/30).

OVER THE TIME LIMITS: CABLEFAX DAILY reports the FCC's Media Bureau last week "released a decision saying it would step in to resolve program carriage disputes involving Wealth TV and MASN because an Administrative Law Judge set a hearing date beyond the FCC-imposed 60-day deadline for issuing decisions." The Media Bureau's "decision to grant their requests does not mention" NFL Network (CABLEFAX DAILY, 12/30).

NOTES: Speed TV has reached an agreement with Feld Motor Sports Inc. to extend its broadcast rights deal for the Monster Energy Supercross Series through '13. New deals are also in place to air events from the AMA Arenacross Series, USHRA Monster Jam and Int'l Hot Rod Association (IHRA) Nitro Jam. Contracts for the Arenacross and Monster Jam run through '12, while the IHRA contract is a one-year deal for the '09 season (Speed)....In N.Y., David Hinckley lists ESPN's documentary "Black Magic" among his best shows from '08, as it is "poignant, funny, revealing." Meanwhile, Gold Medal-winning swimmer Michael Phelps' "primal scream over his relay team's closest win at the Summer Olympics" is among his top TV moments of '08 (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 12/30).
