Backhand It Like Beckham: Murray Signs With 19 Entertainment

Andy Murray Joins Nojak Djokovic As Part
Of CAA/19 Entertainment's Client Roster
Andy Murray, the No. 4-ranked player on the ATP World Tour, has signed a representation deal with 19 Entertainment, the same agency that reps Galaxy MF David Beckham, among others, according to the PRESS ASSOCIATION. Murray and his brother Jamie, the top doubles player in the U.K., have "also penned an agreement with CAA Sports, who will work on 19's behalf in the USA in particular." The deal begins March 1, and the two firms "will deal with all the brothers' on-court and off-court activity." CAA reps Novak Djokovic, who is currently ranked No. 3 in the world (PA, 12/30). CAA/19 beat out IMG, which reps top-ranked players Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, among others, and offers a "traditional lure for the top players." France-based Lagardère Group was considered a "dark horse," as it has "exceedingly deep pockets." In London, Neil Harman reported Murray will start the '09 season with the "promise of [US$144.6M] from the management companies that are vying for his signature." Harman noted Reebok reportedly may have to drop its deal with Sony Ericsson WTA member Jelena Jankovic "because of financial cutbacks," and there may be "all sorts of restraints on such spending in an era of downturns and depressions." However, for Murray, the "money can be mustered" (LONDON TIMES, 12/29). In Glasgow, Stephen Stewart notes Murray has already signed deals with Highland Spring, Head rackets, Royal Bank of Scotland and clothing firm Fred Perry. But Murray "faces his most lucrative year to date" in '09 after finishing 2nd in the '08 U.S. Open and "positioning himself as the 'next most likely' to win a grand slam championship" (GLASGOW DAILY RECORD, 12/30).
