Lerner Looking To Fill Browns GM
Position As Early As This Week |
On the heels of the Browns firing both GM Phil Savage and coach Romeo Crennel, the team's future "could be shaped by the end of the week" when team Owner Randy Lerner "hopes to land the club's next chief football executive," according to Tony Grossi of the Cleveland PLAIN DEALER. Lerner has received permission to interview Patriots VP/Player Personnel Scott Pioli, and the two could meet as early as Tuesday. An NFL source said that other candidates to head the team's football operations include Falcons President Rich McKay and Eagles GM Tom Heckert, though Lerner "would not identify the executives on his radar other than Pioli." Lerner indicated that the possibility of Dolphins Exec VP/Football Operations Bill Parcells opting out of his deal with the team and being available "puts him into the mix," but Grossi notes that would be a "long shot because it has been reported that Parcells would not compete for a job with Pioli, who is married to Parcells' daughter." Since former Steelers coach and current CBS NFL studio analyst Bill Cowher said that he was not interested in the Browns' head coaching vacancy, Lerner indicated that he "prefers to have the executive position filled first," though he will proceed to "line up interviews with prospective head coach candidates" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 12/30).
LIVE & LERNER: In Akron, Marla Ridenour writes with "so much to be done, Lerner seemed somewhat frazzled" during Monday's press conference announcing Crennel's firing, leaving the room once and also "accepting a note from his assistant." Lerner, looking back on Savage and Crennel's four-year stint with the team, said, "I would like to think we have some things to show for it in terms of a much improved roster. I think we have a far more stable organization. I would like to think that we are therefore a more compelling organization to come be a part of than we were four years ago." But Lerner added, "It's my responsibility. There's absolutely no question about it" (AKRON BEACON JOURNAL, 12/30). In Cleveland, Bud Shaw writes Lerner is a "reluctant owner whose latest wish list is a 'brand name' who can bring instant credibility to the organization that has remained incredibly dysfunctional during his stewardship." Fans "not only have to trust that Lerner can make the right choice this time but that he can make it quickly," because "competition with other organizations in need of help doesn't allow for a fact-finding trip" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 12/30).
