NFL Personnel Moves: Jets Fire Mangini After Just Three Seasons

Mangini Out As Jets Coach
After Three Seasons
Jets Owner Woody Johnson and GM Mike Tannenbaum this morning at the team's HQs announced the firing of coach Eric Mangini (Mult., 12/29). In N.Y., Brian Costello writes Mangini's tenure with the Jets, which began in January '06, will be "remembered for his tight-lipped approach with the media and the paranoia felt in the locker room," as Mangini "brought the approach of his mentor," Patriots coach Bill Belichick. Jets veterans "grumbled at how Mangini treated them" (NYPOST.com, 12/29). Johnson: "I don't think it was one thing. It was just Mike's and my judgment that we had to go in a different direction. There's nothing specific. It's just a call that we made and hopefully it is correct. Eric has done some amazing things and nobody has been a harder worker. This is not a decision that we reached yesterday. We respect Eric for what he has done but we want to build on this successful foundation that he has laid. We will quickly start this process" (NYDAILYNEWS.com, 12/29). NFL Network’s Adam Schefter reported the Jets “debated last week giving him a one-year extension that they were going to announce on Saturday. ... When that extension did not materialize, I think that was a very ominous sign” (NFL Network, 12/29). ESPN's Chris Mortensen said of Johnson's decision to fire Mangini, "Don't forget they got a new stadium going up, controversy over (PSLs) he's got to sell, and obviously he's trying to re-energize his fan base, not just his organization." Mortensen added of Tannenbaum being retained as GM, "Based on the vibes I've been getting the last few weeks it does not surprise me. ... Tannenbaum was facing some heat in terms of the questions (at today's press conference) but he is definitely going forward" ("SportsCenter," ESPN, 12/29).
