Nastia Liukin Is A Finalist For Dallas
Morning News' "Texan of the Year"
The DALLAS MORNING NEWS has listed U.S. Gold Medal-winning gymnast NASTIA LIUKIN as a finalist for the paper's "Texan of the Year" honor. Liukin's agent, Premier Management Group's EVAN MORGENSTEIN, said that Liukin's "accomplishments, appearance and family story give her the chance to endure as few Olympic champions before her." Morgenstein: "She's got the ability, if this thing is handled right, to be iconic" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 12/23).

BOOK SHELF: In Seattle, Jayda Evans wrote U.S. Gold Medal-winning swimmer MICHAEL PHELPS' new book, "NO LIMITS: THE WILL TO SUCCEED," offers "insightful looks back at the races that earned Phelps eight gold medals," but the book "doesn't dive into much drama or intimate details about the swimmer himself." Evans: "If you're looking for why Phelps isn't close with his father, FRED, you'll have to dig up newspaper reports" (SEATTLE TIMES, 12/21)....In Toronto, Garth Woolsey wrote in the new book, "THE FIX: SOCCER AND ORGANIZED CRIME," author DECLAN HILL has come "face-to-face with dangerous men who claim to have routinely bought off players, referees, team officials and league overlords in order to predetermine the outcome of games and capitalize on that knowledge by placing enormous wagers." The "corruption, it would seem, is global and insidious, up to and including international competitions, the World Cup included" (TORONTO STAR, 12/21)....The Univ. of Nebraska has reissued PAUL GALLICO's "FAREWELL TO SPORT" in paperback (SPORTINGNEWS.com, 12/19).

Given Keys To Daytona, Ormond Beach
NAMES: U.S. Gold Medal-winning beach volleyball player PHIL DALHAUSSER yesterday received the keys to both Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach, Florida (Daytona Beach NEWS-JOURNAL, 12/23)....The Vikings have donated $15,000 to the Elliot Park Neighborhood in Minneapolis, the first of "what could be several donations," toward showing what they "plan to do to help revitalize the area, where they hope" their new stadium will be located (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 12/22)....Steelers WR HINES WARD and his mother will co-star in a movie, titled "MY MOTHER." The film's release date is not yet available (SPORTINGNEWS.com, 12/22)....New York Gov. DAVID PATERSON, who is visiting U.S. troops in Iraq, brought with him 150 Yankees caps, courtesy of the team, to distribute to the military (N.Y. POST, 12/23).
