Rock Chalk: New LeBron Nikes Revolve Around Pregame Ritual

LeBron's New Nike Shoes Feature
Nod To His Chalk-Tossing Ritual
Cavaliers F LeBron James during the team's game Thursday against the Wizards at Quicken Loans Arena "will debut a 'chalk' version" of his Nike Zoom LeBron VI signature shoe, according to Brian Windhorst of the Cleveland PLAIN DEALER. The tongue of the shoe will feature a silhouette of James' "well-known ritual of tossing chalk or rosin into the air before games." The launch "dovetails with television ads Nike has been running" for the past month, and the shoe will match the Cavaliers' alternate blue jerseys. Each fan in attendance at Thursday's game will receive a "packet of chalk to throw into the air along with James after pregame introductions." James said of his relationship with Nike, "It's not just an endorsement deal. We feed off each other. If we think something will be hot or people can relate to it, we work on that" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 12/23). In Akron, George Thomas writes of the promotion, "Nike hype for something that started as a lark" (AKRON BEACON JOURNAL, 12/23). Meanwhile, also during the game, 1,000 "12 25 08" navy Nike Witness T-shirts will be tossed into the stands. The Cavaliers also are offering the shirt to fans who purchase two $35 tickets to the game (Cavaliers).

WHAT'S ALL THE BUZZ? FORBES' Tom Van Riper reported Hornets G Chris Paul's newest Nike Jordan Brand shoe, the CP3 II, which will launch in New Orleans in February and nationally in March, is Paul's second Jordan Brand shoe and is being "more heavily marketed than the first." The new shoe will be "clad with tributes to family members, including Paul's' grandfather, Nathaniel Jones," as well as to late Wake Forest Univ. basketball coach Skip Prosser. Meanwhile, Paul by the February 15 NBA All-Star Game in Phoenix will join the national "Got Milk?" ad effort (FORBES.com, 12/22).

MIKE CHECK: CNBC's Brian Shactman reports the limited-edition Jordan Brand Air Jordan XX3 Premier shoes went on sale Tuesday in the United States. Only 23 stores are stocking 23 pairs each of the shoe, which are retailing at $230. The shoes are “already being advertised on sites like eBay for as much as $3,500” ("Worldwide Exchange,” CNBC, 12/23).
