Devils Averaging 14,931 Fans
Through 17 Games At The Rock |
Devils Owner Jeff Vanderbeek "remains optimistic" that the team "will be profitable for a second straight season in the Prudential Center," according to Rich Chere of the Newark STAR-LEDGER. Vanderbeek: "The health of the Devils is fine. Certainly we saw the light (financially) last year, but we need to continue to grow. I haven't seen specific numbers, but I think our attendance is just a touch up (from last year at this point). I think the prospects are good." The Devils have averaged 14,931 for 17 home dates, while last season they averaged 15,312 through 14 home games during the same time period. Meanwhile, Vanderbeek said of the economy, "We are in uncharted waters for almost everybody, if not everybody. You can find optimists and pessimists, but nobody knows for sure." Vanderbeek: "The next big yardstick for the NBA and NHL will be playoff tickets." Chere notes in the meantime, Vanderbeek can "feel fortunate he did not lose money" with former NASDAQ Chair Bernie Madoff, who has been charged with securities fraud. Vanderbeek: "I wasn't involved with Bernie at all. I know a fair amount of people who were involved. It's amazing something like that can happen" (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 12/23).
