Bill Davis Racing Sells Majority Stake In NASCAR Teams

Bill Davis Racing Victorious In Last Season's Truck
Series With No. 23 Entry Driven By Johnny Benson
Bill Davis Racing (BDR) has sold its Triad Racing Development, a "major supplier of NASCAR engines and chassis, along with a majority stake in its NASCAR teams" to the newly formed Triad Racing Technologies (TRT), according to Nate Ryan of USA TODAY. TRT, which is co-owned by Marty Gaunt and Michael Held, wants to "grow the customer base of Triad, which builds engines and chassis for more than a dozen Toyota teams" in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Though the company makes Toyota engines, Gaunt said that Triad can "build chassis for any manufacturer." Triad is "interested in continuing the truck and Cup teams campaigned by Bill Davis" last season. BDR's No. 23 Truck Series entry driven by Johnny Benson, who will not return to the team next season, captured the series title last year, while its No. 22 Sprint Cup Series entry, driven by Dave Blaney, finished the season ranked in the top 35, "guaranteeing it a spot in the first five races" of '09 (USA TODAY, 12/23). BLOOMBERG NEWS' Gene Laverty noted BDR Owner Bill Davis had been "seeking a merger or sale of his one-car race team since losing Caterpillar Inc. as a sponsor" to Richard Childress Racing at the end of the '08 season (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 12/22).

MOVING FORWARD: Gaunt said of the deal, "When you've been involved for this long in the sport, and won in all three series, there's definitely a lot of emotion involved. But I believe Bill got to a time in his life where he said, 'There's other opportunities for me.' I think he realized this is the right time for him to move on." More Gaunt: "When we told him this is what we'd like to do, presented it to him at the round-table and went back and forth, he got to a point where he wanted to move on this deal" (AP, 12/22). Gaunt and Held said that they "hope to have" the No. 22 Sprint Cup car on the track in '09, but they "likely won't be able to announce firm plans for another few weeks." Gaunt said that BDR GM Mark Chambers will remain in the same position with TRT, while other leadership positions will be "determined in the next few weeks" (SCENEDAILY.com, 12/22).

SNACK TIME: Mars North America will sign a multi-year extension on its deal as an official NASCAR partner and aligns Mars with its existing contracts with Joe Gibbs Racing. Mars' M&M's brand will serve as the Official Chocolate of NASCAR; Mars' Snickers brand will serve as the Official Chocolate Bar of NASCAR; Mars' Combos snack brand will serve as the Official Cheese-Filled Snack of NASCAR; and Mars' Pedigree brand will serve as the Official Pet Food of NASCAR (Mars).
