Penguins Decide Not To Sell PSLs For New Consol Energy Center

Pens Cite Economy, Fan Loyalty As Reasons
For Not Charging PSLs At New Arena
Penguins President David Morehouse, in a letter mailed to season-ticket holders Monday, said that Penguins co-Owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle have "decided against selling" PSLs for seats in the Consol Energy Center, set to open in 2010, according to Mark Belko of the PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE. Morehouse: "With the economy in the shape it's in, combined with the level of support we've had from season ticket holders over the years, we decided it was something we weren't going to do. ... Mario and Ron just decided they didn't want to do it. They just said no." SportsCorp President Marc Ganis noted that PSLs are "far more common in pro football stadiums and collegiate facilities than they are in hockey." Only two NHL franchises, the Blue Jackets and Maple Leafs, charge for PSLs. Robert Morris Univ. Dir of Sport Management Dave Synowka said that given the "deteriorating economy, it was a 'smart business decision' for the Penguins to ice" the PSLs idea. The Penguins have sold out 81 consecutive home games and have a waiting list of 5,000 people for season tickets, but Synowka said that the demand for Penguins' tickets is "not as high as it is for the season tickets to Steelers games." Meanwhile, the Penguins "probably will raise ticket prices when they move into the new arena." Morehouse in his letter said that season ticket holders "will be receiving information on seat relocation and pricing plans next year." The team also "will be opening a marketing suite in One Chatham Center that will house a scale model of the new arena as well as build-outs of a suite and loge box" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 12/23).

FOUNDING FATHERS: The POST-GAZETTE's Belko wrote, "In what is one of the latest moneymaking trends in the sports industry," the Penguins are "exploring the idea of offering partnerships to companies to display their names on parts" of the team's new Consol Energy Center. Morehouse: "We're looking into the possibility of having founding partners that would be our sponsors in specific areas within the new building." Morehouse said that the Penguins "haven't started to talk to companies about founding partnerships yet, but they expect to do so next year" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 12/22).
