Media Notes

In N.Y., Bob Raissman cited a source as saying that YES Network is "in 'serious' discussions" with analyst Al Leiter about his role in '09, as YES will have to share Leiter with MLB Network. Raissman wrote of MLB Network, "Got to wonder what the suits running the show there were thinking. The meeting probably went something like this: 'Gee, let's launch our network, with some old rerun of a baseball game, in the middle of the college bowl season and NFL playoffs. What a spectacular idea.' That's MLB for you -- brains in their bottom." But "you can't argue with some of the quality voices" the net has hired, and MLB Net execs reportedly are "talking to another insightful analyst, Lee Mazzilli, about a spot" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 12/21).

MOVING ON: On Long Island, Neil Best cited a source as saying that WFAN-AM morning host Chris Carlin will leave the station "when his contract expires in two weeks and join SNY full time." Carlin has served as co-host of SNY's "Loud Mouths" and "Beer Money," and he is "expected to continue with those shows and add other appearances" (NEWSDAY.com, 12/20).

NOTES: In N.Y., Phil Mushnick writes if ESPN Radio 1050 N.Y.'s "Hockey This Week" show, which is hosted by Don La Greca and Chris Botta, was "about baseball or football, it would be known and valued as one of the most informative and intelligent on local radio" (N.Y. POST, 12/22)....NBC Saturday will broadcast a two-hour primetime special about the Beijing Olympics titled "The Beijing Olympic Opening Ceremony: TV Event of the Year." The special will be hosted by NBC’s Bob Costas and Matt Lauer, who will "highlight the biggest moments from the Games" (HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, 12/22).
