NFL May Sell Radio Rights To Company Other Than Westwood One
The NFL is "considering selling its national radio rights to a company other than Westwood One" for the first time in 22 years, according to John Ourand in this week's SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL. The NFL "allowed an exclusive negotiating window with the financially troubled radio network to lapse this month and opened the process to other bidders for the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons." A decision is expected by the end of January. Westwood One has held NFL radio rights for 29 of the past 31 years, and while its exclusive negotiating period ended, sources indicated that the company "still is in the running to keep the rights." During its exclusive negotiating period, Westwood One "offered to pay about $20[M] a year to extend its deal for two years, a figure that is relatively flat with its current deal, but up to 30[%] higher than what ESPN Radio is expected to offer for the entire package." But sources said that NFL execs "passed on the offer." The league last week sent letters to radio companies, including ESPN Radio, Sporting News Radio, Sports USA Radio and The Content Factory, suggesting that it is "open to splitting its rights among two or more radio companies" (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 12/22 issue).
