BJCC Unanimously Selects HOK To Design Proposed Domed Stadium

HOK Provided BJCC Board With Images Of
Proposed Design During Two-Hour Presentation
The Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex (BJCC) BOD Wednesday "unanimously picked HOK Inc. to design the city's proposed $500[M] domed stadium," according to Roy Williams of the BIRMINGHAM NEWS. HOK was chosen over Dallas-based HKS. Both firms "made two-hour presentations before the BJCC board last Friday," but HOK was the "only firm to provide the board with images of its proposed design as well as a wooden model of what it would look like." HKS officials said that they "would prepare a rendering after talking in detail with the BJCC to determine exactly the features wanted." After the vote, Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford, a BJCC board member, said that he "would ask the City Council next Tuesday to authorize the city to commit financing necessary to allow HOK to begin the design process."  Williams noted HOK "has advised the board for more than a decade during its efforts to build a multipurpose dome that would host conventions, sports and entertainment events." HOK Senior Principal Dennis Wellner said that it would take "12 to 18 months to complete the dome design." Under that scenario, workers "could break ground on the project by July 2010." Project consultant HB Brantley said that it "would take up to 32 months for a construction company to build the dome." BJCC Exec Dir Jack Fields has said that the agency "expects to spend" $20M to have complete architectural and engineering drawings (BIRMINGHAM NEWS, 12/18).
