Marketplace Roundup

MARKETING WEEK's Catherine Turner reported Barclays has launched a "group-wide review of its global sponsorships, in a move that could see the financial giant scrap" its title sponsorship of the English Premier League. The current three-year, US$102M deal runs through May 2010. Barclays Global Retail & Commercial Banking CMO Libby Chambers said that the EPL sponsorship is "'very much' part of the overall review." She added, however, that the deal "has done a 'great job' of raising the global profile of Barclays" (MARKETINGWEEK.co.uk, 12/17).

LAW & ORDER: In K.C., Dan Margolies reported the Univ. of Kansas (KU) Tuesday "sought an order of contempt" against Joe-College.com and its owner, Larry Sinks, claiming the Web site was "continuing to display and sell infringing apparel in open defiance of the court." KU and Kansas Athletics, KU's marketing arm, "want the court to impose a series of 'coercive sanctions' on the defendants," which include the "seizure of the offending T-shirts and sweatshirts, disgorgement of triple the profits Joe-College has earned from the apparel and fines of at least $1,000 per day." In July, a court ruled that Joe-College, Sinks and screen printer Clark Orth "'willfully infringed' KU's trademarks and ordered them to pay the school about $127,000" (K.C. STAR, 12/17).
