Former NFLer's Wife Barred From Meeting About Care For Retirees

Goodell Following Wishes Of Retired Players
In Keeping Wife From Benefits Meeting
Eleanor Perfetto, the wife of former NFLer Ralph Wenzel, "tried to enter the room" during a discussion regarding later-life care of NFL retirees Thursday in Bethesda, Maryland, but NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell "told her the meeting was for players only," according to Alan Schwarz of the N.Y. TIMES. Goodell later said that he had been "following the wishes of a group of retired players who had requested the meetings." Pro Football HOFer Larry Carson confirmed that and added that players "felt that the presence of women could impede the discussion." But Perfetto, whose husband has degenerative dementia, and the wives of other players with dementia "criticized their exclusion, adding their voices to a debate over the care of retired players that has been the subject of two Congressional hearings." Perfetto said, "We wives are the voice of players with dementia, because they can't speak for themselves." Before entering the ballroom where the talk was being held, Goodell told Perfetto that he "would speak with her at another time." Carson said Goodell was "doing what we instructed him to do." But Carson added that he would "support a meeting between Goodell and wives of players with dementia" (N.Y. TIMES, 12/13).
