DCRage’s Rants, Thoughts, & Other Stuff

“If the economy is really in as much trouble as we are led to believe, then either Scott Boras and the Yankees (among others in baseball and sports in general) are immune to it, don’t care, or they know something we don’t”

“One would think in tough economic times like these, even the Yankees might find a salary like this a bit egregious. Silly me, I should have known that times aren't all that bad if you are a baseball owner or a baseball player.”
Sports Blunders

“You'll always hear fans of smaller market teams like the Royals and Pirates complain that it's not fair that the Yanks spend this ridiculous amount of money. … In baseball, it's not about the money you spend, it's about making good decisions. The Yankees spend this much money because they can.”

"The fact is, the New York Yankees are a financial juggernaut that no team in professional sports can match. … New York is a perfect storm of financial output, fan interest, and crazy owner who doesn't [care] about the rest of the league. No other team has this.”

"Anyone else think the economics of baseball are borderline ridiculous? … While most of the baseball world struggles to regain their financial footing in this rough economy, leave it to the Yankees to blow every other offer out of the water.”

SportsMedia Challenge's Buzz Manager analyzed online discussion surrounding the Yankees signing P CC Sabathia to a seven year, $161M deal -- a record high for a pitcher in baseball history. Visit www.SportsBusinessDaily.com for more info. See more info on this topic.

  • The Buzz ranked 10 out of 10, a topic of a high level of interest among sports bloggers.
  • Bloggers in the positive category (38%) were fans who thought that the deal was a good one for the Yankees, despite the high dollar amount. They were not surprised considering the Yankees already have a very high payroll relative to other MLB teams.
  • Bloggers in the negative category (32%) were frustrated with perceived mixed messages in that the Yankees are asking for increased public funding for their new stadium, yet have the money to make a huge deal like this. Some felt fans may be insulted by the deal given the current state of the U.S. economy. Some believed the Yankees overpaid for Sabathia and cited past signings which did not turn out as well as people hoped. Finally, some simply believe that Sabathia will not be able to perform up to the expectations that $161M warrants.
  • Bloggers in the neutral category (30%) centered around just relaying the story, many citing the original NY Post article that broke the story.
