Pacquiao-De La Hoya Draws 1.25 Million PPV Buys, $70M PPV Revenue

PPV Revenue For Pacquiao-De La Hoya
Ties Fight For Ninth Overall On All-Time List
HBO Sports reported 1.25 million PPV buys for Saturday's Manny Pacquiao-Oscar De La Hoya welterweight bout, making it the highest-performing PPV event of '08. The fight, which was presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank, Inc., generated $70M in PPV revenue. The bout represents the fourth time in boxing PPV history that a non-heavyweight fight has reached the 1 million buy mark, with each of the previous three also featuring De La Hoya (HBO). ESPN.com's Dan Rafael reported the $70M figure makes the fight the "third biggest-selling non-heavyweight fight in history," and the total also ties the fight for ninth overall on the all-time list. HBO PPV Senior VP Mark Taffet said that the fight drew 680,000 buys from cable systems and 570,000 from satellite providers. Rafael noted the figure is a "whopping total in a tough economy," and it "likely will go up slightly when the full accounting is complete." Top Rank Chair Bob Arum, who promoted the fight, said, "When it's all counted up, it will end up at 1.35 or 1.4 million (subscriptions)." Taffet: "It was our hope the fight would do a million buys and take its place among the mega fights in the annals of boxing history. In this economy, our expectations were appropriately tempered. But 1.25 million buys shows tremendous support from boxing fans all across the country and reinforces the importance of continuing to present the biggest and best fights the sports has to offer. This fight had strong performances across all markets covering all demographics" (ESPN.com, 12/10). In L.A., Lance Pugmire reports the live gate for the fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas was "better than" $17M (L.A. TIMES, 12/11).

END OF AN ERA: USA TODAY's J. Michael Falgoust writes the "era of monthly PPV shows appears to have come to an end at HBO," as instead of the "usual eight to 10 dates the network holds each year, that could be pared to as few as four in 2009." The January 24 Antonio Margarito-Shane Mosley fight will appear on regular HBO, and Taffet said, "In years past, it's very likely that would've been a pay-per-view fight." Taffet: "In 2009, one of our goals is to restore our balance by having a number of big fights live on the HBO network and reserve pay-per-view for the megafights." Falgoust notes the "state of the economy is a factor" as well, but Taffet contends that there have "long been plans to make this move" (USA TODAY, 12/11).
