Selig Gives A's Permission To Consider Other Locales For Ballpark

Lew Wolff Can Build A's Ballpark
Elsewhere If Fremont Plans Fail |
MLB Commissioner Bud Selig sent a letter to A's Owner Lew Wolff "giving him permission to consider locating in 'other communities'" if his plans to build the proposed Cisco Field in Fremont, California, "fall flat," according to Matthew Artz of the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS. The letter "raises the intriguing possibility that the A's might consider San Jose, which has a stadium site available and environmental studies in place." But the "big obstacle in San Jose" is that MLB has granted the Giants "'territorial rights' to the city." Wolff: "If we're not able to work it out in Fremont, what the letter says is we can look at other communities. I don't think there's any restrictions as to where." A's co-Owner Keith Wolff: "We're not interpreting anything. We're not focused on any other communities." Meanwhile, the Fremont City Council yesterday learned that Catellus Development Corp., the owner of the site targeted for the A's ballpark village, "opposes the proposal." Keith Wolff said that opposition from Catellus "doesn't necessarily kill the ballpark village plan." But the opposition "could complicate the development and open the door to potential litigation" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 12/10). In S.F., Vlae Kershner wrote it is a "mystery why Selig would change his mind about San Jose, if that's what just happened." Kershner: "Maybe the economy is so weak that baseball just needs to get this situation resolved" (SFGATE.com, 12/9).
