Gillett Forcefully Denies Rumors He Is Shopping Canadiens

Gillett May Be Willing To Sell
Small Minority Stake In Properties
Canadiens Owner George Gillett Thursday "insisted forcefully he has no intention of selling" the Canadiens in response to media reports "intimating he is struggling financially," according to Sean Gordon of the GLOBE & MAIL. Gillett: "I'm angry that I need to keep denying this. ... As far as I know, no one has ever talked to anyone about the sale of the club. ... I find it particularly troublesome, in our centennial year, why anyone would create lies like that and take away from one of the greatest moments in the Montreal Canadiens' storied history. We have received many inquiries over the years regarding a possible sale. We have never entertained any of them." Gillett added he "never authorized anyone, never prepared any materials to that end." But Gillett said that he "might be willing to sell off a small minority stake in his sports properties, which also include" English Premier League club Liverpool. Gillett: "We have thought on several occasions of trying to create a way that we might create a strip, or an investment strip, that might enable fans or interested parties in investing in one or more of our sports assets. I presume that we will continue that inquiry or that process on occasion in the future" (GLOBE & MAIL, 12/5). In Montreal, Dave Stubbs notes the Canadiens sale rumors "deflected a little of the spotlight off" the team's unveiling of Centennial Plaza, the ribbon-cutting for the Bell Centre concourse tribute to the club's history coming on its 99th birthday. Gillett Thursday held a "lengthy, spirited, off-the-record discussion with a small group of reporters," after which he "spoke for the record" regarding the rumors. Gillett said the Canadiens club "has never been for sale" (Montreal GAZETTE, 12/5).
