Bloomberg Critical Of How Giants Handled Burress Incident

Burress May Have Violated
NFL Personal Conduct Policy
NFL Giants WR Plaxico Burress yesterday was charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon after he accidentally shot himself early Saturday morning, and N.Y. Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the city Police Department (NYPD) yesterday criticized the Giants, who they said "neglected to notify the authorities of the shooting," according to Macur, Baker & Moynihan of the N.Y. TIMES. Bloomberg and the NYPD also criticized New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where Burress was treated, for "failing to call the police about his gun-related injury, as state law requires." NYPD spokesperson Paul Browne said that the department "expected the NFL and the Giants to be more forthcoming, considering the seriousness of the situation." The NFL and the team said that they are "cooperating fully with the authorities." NFL Senior VP/PR Greg Aiello said that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell yesterday spoke to Bloomberg, "ensuring Bloomberg that the league was doing everything it could to help the investigation." Browne said that NFL security had promised that Giants LB Antonio Pierce, who was with Burress on the night of the shooting, "would be available at noon" yesterday for questioning. However, Pierce "failed to show up" at the police station and was "not available for an interview when the police showed up at his residence." The NYPD said that in his place, Giants Dir of Player Development Charles Way and VP/Medical Services Ronnie Barnes arrived at the station to meet with police. Pierce Saturday was "interviewed by NFL security at the Giants' team hotel" (N.Y. TIMES, 12/2).

SILENT COUNT: In New Jersey, Ian O'Connor notes even though the Giants "followed NFL policy and quickly informed league security officials of the shooting, and even though those officials in turn contacted the police, Bloomberg did nothing to dispel the notion that someone in the organization might've asked the hospital to keep the Burress matter private." However, a Giants exec said, "We absolutely did not say anything to the hospital about keeping this incident quiet" (Bergen RECORD, 12/2). Meanwhile, in N.Y., Paul Schwartz notes Burress could be in "violation of the league's Personal Conduct Policy, which would presumably lead to a suspension of at least four games" (N.Y. POST, 12/2).

BEST INTEREST AT HEART? Burress' agent, Rosenhaus Sports principal Drew Rosenhaus, last night during halftime of ESPN's "MNF" coverage, said that he was upset about the incident because "it had been a year since another of his clients," late Redskins S Sean Taylor, was shot and killed." But in N.Y., Richard Sandomir writes the "circumstances of the Taylor and Burress shootings could not have been more different, and Rosenhaus's failure to distinguish the two sounded insensitive." Rosenhaus last night was in "self-absorbed-agent mode, caring only about himself and his client, and praising" Giants ownership and GM Jerry Reese for "caring, so far, only about Burress's health." Rosenhaus: "I'm very touched by the way the Giants have handled this." But Sandomir writes, "Of course he is. The Giants have full leverage on Burress" (N.Y. TIMES, 12/2). Rosenhaus said of the Giants, "We've not talked about the contract. They've not talked about him playing. They're concerned about his health, his well-being, his welfare as a human being. Credit the Giants organization tremendously, and in all my conversations, their last concern is about football. It's about Plax, the person” ("MNF," ESPN, 12/1).
