Churchill Downs To Unveil New Infield Club For Kentucky Derby

Churchill Downs' Infield
To Get Revamped
Churchill Downs is introducing a new Infield Club for the '09 Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks races. The club will be a temporary facility constructed in the center of the infield and will include several amenities for infield patrons for the first time. The area will include horseshoe-shaped bar, private mutuel windows and self-serve betting machines, sports bar-style concessions, limited shaded seating areas and upgraded restrooms. Tickets are currently available for $150 for the Kentucky Derby and $50 for the Oaks (Churchill Downs). In Louisville, Gregory Hall reported the Infield Club "will offer premium amenities that may not be available to most of the sometimes rowdy infield throng." Churchill Downs Senior Dir of Strategic Partnerships Tricia Amburgey said that the idea "resulted from interviews with customers -- and caters roughly to the same, if a little more settled, infield customer." She added that the club "is expected to accommodate 5,000 people each day, but could be adjusted." Hall noted Churchill Downs has "frozen almost all Derby and Oaks prices." However, Churchill Downs Senior VP/Communications & National Public Affairs Kevin Flanery said the Infield Club is "totally separate from the ticket price freezing announcement we made last week." Flanery: "We're going to continue to innovate, even when we have things like the ticket price freeze" (Louisville COURIER-JOURNAL, 11/27). In Lexington, Janet Patton noted though infield admission is "still considered unlimited, Churchill has gradually eroded the open infield space, setting aside more prime track-side real estate for pricey suites and corporate boxes" (LEXINGTON HERALD-LEADER, 11/27).
