Fox Earns 14.5 Final Rating For Giants-Cardinals National Game

Fox' Giants-Cardinals Game Earns 14.5 Rating
Through Week 12, Fox' late-window game (six telecasts) is averaging a 13.9/27 (22.5 million viewers), up 0.7% over last year's 13.8/27 (six telecasts), and currently ranks as the highest-rated and most-watched program in all of TV. Fox' national game on Sunday, featuring Giants-Cardinals, posted a 14.5/27 final Nielsen rating (23.3 million viewers), which is up 5.8% over last year's 13.7/25 for CBS' late-window coverage in Week 12, which featured Broncos-Bears. "The OT" on Fox also posted a 7.5/12 (12.1 million viewers) from 7:30-8:00pm ET. Season-to-date, "The OT" is averaging a 7.4/13 (11.7 million viewers), up 8.8% over last year's 6.8/12. Meanwhile, NBC earned a 9.5/15 final Nielsen rating for its coverage of Colts-Chargers "Sunday Night Football," down 29.1% from a 13.4/21 for Eagles-Patriots in Week 12 last year, which was the highest-rated "SNF" game of '07 (THE DAILY).

NEW YORK STATE OF MIND: On Long Island, Neil Best writes under the header, "Jets, Giants Becoming Must-See TV." Prior to Sunday's games, the Jets and Giants were first and fourth, respectively, in the NFL in "local ratings increase" compared with the same period in '07. The Jets' local ratings are up 33%, while the Giants' ratings have jumped 13% over last season. Also, the Giants and Jets rank first and second in average HHs watching in home markets, at 1.068 million and 938,000, respectively. But Best writes the "big change nationally is the Jets, who suddenly matter," as they are 8-3 and in first place in the AFC East (NEWSDAY, 11/25). In N.Y., Bob Raissman notes the Jets "are not scheduled for prime time for the rest of the regular season," but the team's first "SNF" appearance "could be the last game of the season when Miami visits the Meadowlands." The NFL for Week 14 already has flexed Redskins-Ravens to "SNF" in place of the previously-scheduled Patriots-Seahawks game. NBC is slated to air Giants-Cowboys during Week 15, and Raissman writes "that game sticks." For Week 16, NBC is scheduled to air Chargers-Buccaneers, and it is "highly doubtful" the Jets-Seahawks game will be flexed into its place. There currently is no "SNF" game slated for Week 17 (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 11/25).

MANIC MONDAY: In Milwaukee, Bob Wolfley writes QB Brett Favre's offseason trade from the Packers to the Jets was a "major feature" of ESPN "MNF" analyst Tony Kornheiser's commentary during last night's Packers-Saints game. Kornheiser during the Week One Vikings-Packers "MNF" game also had a "preoccupation" with Favre. Meanwhile, Saints RB Reggie Bush missed last night's game with an injury, but that "did not stop ESPN from running a feature about Bush and his girlfriend Kim Kardashian" during "Monday Night Countdown." The feature was "nothing more than an ad for ESPN the Magazine, so maybe Bush's actual availability wasn't the point anyway" (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 11/25).

NOTES: In St. Petersburg, Tom Jones wrote Fox sideline reporter Charissa Thompson, who covered Sunday's Buccaneers-Lions game, "continues to impress." Most of the time, sideline reporters "don't add much to a broadcast," but Thompson "shows what they do add when the job is well done" (ST. PETERSBURG TIMES, 11/24)....Sunday's 49ers-Cowboys game on Fox earned a 28.4 (707,160 HHs) in the Dallas-Ft. Worth market, and a 13.5 (334,328 HHs) in the S.F.-Oakland-San Jose market (DALLASNEWS.com, 11/24).
