Twins President Discusses Features Of Newly Built Target Field

St. Peter Discusses
Target Field In Q&A
Twins President Dave St. Peter, in a Q&A with Bob Sansevere of the ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, said of the Twins' new Target Field, which is set to open in 2010 without a retractable roof, "I'm going to get as many complaints from people who think it's too warm as think it's too cold. We've had an entire generation who never had weather interfere with the baseball experience. It's always been 70 degrees in the Metrodome. We've tried to design the ballpark to provide shade and shelter. I also think we have to toughen up a little bit. We've become a little wimpy as a group in our sports." Asked to list his favorite features in the new ballpark, St. Peter said, "The extra-wide concourse. The sound system. The extra-large video board. Probably the favorite thing will be the accessibility of the ballpark and the views of downtown and how it opens to downtown. There's the connection to the urban grid." When asked what feature should have been added, St. Peter said, "We don't necessarily have a strong water feature in the park. The Royals and Rockies have fountains. That's one thing we don't have. We're really challenged for space for a dedicated museum. I wish we had more space." Asked what other events Target Field may host, St. Peter said, "We want to be the home to a lot of amateur baseball. We talked to the state high school league about hosting the state championships. ... Beyond baseball, I don't think there's any question we'll look to be strategic with musical acts." Meanwhile, St. Peter said the team "spent a lot of time this past summer monitoring" the neighboring county garbage incinerator. St. Peter: "It's more of an issue of perception than reality. Nevertheless, we have taken steps to work with the county to make sure that will never be an issue" (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 11/25).
