UPS Signs Four-Year Global Sponsorship Deal With European Tour

O'Grady Sees Deal As An Indication That
Economy Will Not Eliminate Sports Sponsorships |
UPS has signed a four-year deal to become the official logistics and express sponsor of The European Tour. Under the deal, UPS will sponsor six events each season in Europe and Asia, including the BMW PGA Championship. UPS, which last week launched its association with the Tour during the '08 UBS Hong Kong Open, also will provide transportation and logistical support (UPS). The WALL STREET JOURNAL's Matthew Futterman reports the deal, aside from its "major presence" at the six Tour events, gives UPS "lesser exposure at many others." UPS Dir of Sponsorships & Events Ron Rogowski: "We were looking around for a global platform that would be consistent with our expansion." UPS will have "signs lining the golf course and entertain clients at tournaments worldwide." Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but "baseline official sponsorships" for the European Tour typically run about US$630,000 annually. European Tour CEO George O'Grady said that the deal was a "sign that companies would still look to sports sponsorships, even during the financial downturn." Futterman notes until recently, UPS had "focused its sports-marketing dollars on motor sports, where it has sponsorship deals with both NASCAR and the NHRA" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 11/24).
