London's O2 Arena Eyed As Host
For Multiple Sports
In London, Tom Knight reported a "search for innovative ways to present" track & field to a younger audience could see events being "staged in London's O2 arena." U.K. Athletics Chair Ed Warner "claims the time could be right for looking at new ways to present running, jumping and throwing without the necessity of having a 200m track." Warner: "We are working on innovative ways to use a variety of venues for athletics in order to present the sport in a different way and bring it up to date for a younger audience." Knight noted the arena also is "adaptable enough" for O2 Arena CEO Phil Beard to "consider the possibility of cricket, rugby and even swimming to join athletics in moving indoors" (London TELEGRAPH, 11/19).

MIDWAY MONSTERS: In Green Bay, Mike Vandermause reported several Bears players allegedly "punch[ed] a hole in the wall of the visitors' locker room at Lambeau Field" Sunday following their 37-3 loss to the Packers. Packers Manager of Corporate Communications Aaron Popkey: "We're not certain how it occurred. But it would appear it took place over the weekend. ... We'll make the appropriate repairs." A Bears spokesperson said that the team was "unaware of any property damage" (GREEN BAY PRESS-GAZETTE, 11/18).

DONNING MICKEY EARS: In Orlando, Steven Cole Smith reported the Indy Racing Experience (IRE), which since '01 has been "traveling track-to-track out of Indianapolis," has opened an office at Walt Disney World Speedway. IRE co-Owner Scott Jasek said the company will continue to travel for IRL races, but added that Orlando is "likely to become its permanent home." IRE will "operate alongside the track's longtime resident, the Richard Petty Driving Experience, which offers rides in stock cars" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 11/20).
