Red Sox Top USA Today Sports Weekly's MLB Franchise Rankings

USA TODAY Sports Weekly has ranked the performance of 30 MLB franchises in nine categories during the past five years, and the Red Sox came out No. 1 overall, according to Seth Livingstone of USA TODAY. The franchise "experienced new levels of success and profitability" after Red Sox Owner John Henry, Chair Tom Werner, President & CEO Larry Lucchino and other investors bought the team and Fenway Park in '01 for $700M. Werner: "Financially, I think we have demonstrated that you can increase revenues, increase the bottom line and win. Part of what makes us successful is that we're still hungry. ... We've increased our revenues dramatically over the last five years. We think of Fenway as 'The Little Engine That Could,' and it just keeps chugging along, generating revenues." Lucchino added, "I don't think we've hit some kind of plateau. We'll find new avenues, new possibilities. The 100th anniversary of Fenway Park is going to be a very big deal. We have more plans to enhance Fenway." The following lists USA Today Sports Weekly's rankings of the 30 MLB franchises. The rankings are based on the following criteria: postseason success, regular-season success, this season's regular-season success, drafting/signing success, front-office continuity, franchise value, attendance, affordability and payroll dollars per win.
