Lalas Discusses Galaxy, Beckham
During ESPN2 Studio Appearance |
Former MLS Galaxy President & GM Alexi Lalas was the studio co-host for ESPN2’s coverage of the Revolution-Fire playoff game Thursday night, and while he said he was hesitant to talk about his former team because he did not want to "appear self-serving or bitter,” he did take some subtle shots at the Galaxy. Lalas said the team is “headed in the right direction,” but Galaxy coach & GM Bruce Arena has to “find some leadership.” Lalas: “He needs to go out there and find some real SOBs, some guys that don’t care about saying the truth, don’t care about hurting people’s feeling and aren’t afraid that they’re going to lose their job for doing so. … It’s (no) question that there was a leadership void, and the fact is you need to send a message that nobody is bigger than the club, whether you’re (MF) David Beckham or whether you’re (F) Tristan Bowen, an 18 year-old guy coming into the club.” Lalas did admit that if he “regrets anything” during his time with the club, it is that he “probably didn’t do enough in order to correct that situation.”
TOUCHING ON BECKHAM SITUATION: Lalas said he was a "little disappointed” in how Beckham’s loan to Italian Serie A club AC Milan was handled. Lalas: “Hello, a courtesy telephone call, a little bit of respect to call the coach so that head coach Bruce Arena knows what’s going on, knows that you’re being shopped around.” But he said Beckham is “going to do whatever it takes to play with the (English) national team, and that’s fine.” Lalas: "He helps whatever team he’s playing for, whether it’s the Galaxy or whether it’s AC Milan." Meanwhile, F Landon Donovan has been making overtures about playing for a club in Europe, and Lalas said, “If Landon wants to go, he should go. … Guess what? The Galaxy can survive without Landon Donovan” (ESPN2, 11/6).
