MLB Franchise Notes: Nationals Unveil New Uniforms For '09

The Nationals' Road Uniform Will Feature Red
Lettering, Not Blue, For '09 MLB Season |
In DC, Chico Harlan reports the Nationals Thursday at the ESPN Zone in DC unveiled their new uniforms for the '09 season, including an "alternate blue jersey -- detailed with a stars-and-stripes pattern." The team also will wear a "classic road gray uniform with a red 'Washington' scripted across the chest," and the home white jerseys "will remain virtually the same" (WASHINGTON POST, 11/7). In DC, Ben Goessling notes the "biggest change comes in the team's road uniforms, where the word 'Washington' will be in red script instead of blue block lettering." The team will wear the alternate jersey on July 4, September 10 and "on days when the team is holding military appreciation events." The Nationals' red alternate jerseys will feature a "curly W" instead of the "interlocking 'DC' logo" (WASHINGTON TIMES, 11/7).
RIGHT ON TARGET: The Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission (MSFC) reported that the Twins this season earned ticket revenue of about $52.1M, up almost $4.8M from the '07 season. The Twins' "share of concession sales" was $7.5M, up more than $800,000 from last season. The Twins also drew a total attendance of 2,302,431 to the Metrodome, the "third-highest total in team history, and a slight improvement from last year's announced number of 2,296,347." The MSFC said that the "actual count at the turnstile was 2,063,290," up from 2,042,893 in '07 (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 11/7).
TWO-SPORT EXEC? Former Phillies and Blue Jays GM Pat Gillick Wednesday indicated that "if he was offered the Maple Leafs' top hockey job, he would give it some serious thought." Gillick: "I probably would be interested in doing something like that, you know, something different. It could be hockey." In Toronto, Dean McNulty noted Gillick also "has been mentioned" as a candidate for the Blue Jays' President & CEO vacancy, but Gillick "put to rest any speculation that he might be interested in a second stint at Rogers Centre, mostly because of the scope of the job as it is presently constituted" (TORONTO SUN, 11/6).
PIRATES' BOUNTY: A PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE editorial, noting the Pirates' new full-season ticket plan includes prices that start at less than $5 per ticket per game, and states in "major-league sports, there is no greater bargain." The team also will not raise ticket prices for the seventh consecutive season, and by offering these ticket options, Pirates President Frank Coonelly and the team "show they are listening to fans." While the team "tries to return to winning form, let's hope it holds down prices for single-ticket buyers, too" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 11/7).
