Stepping Into The Box: Nike Unveils Uniforms For Diamond Ducks

Univ. Of Oregon's New Baseball Squad Has
Six Nike-Designed Uniform Combos
The Univ. of Oregon (UO) Wednesday unveiled Nike-designed uniforms for its nascent baseball team that "implemented traditional looks that include the script 'Ducks' on the home uniforms ... and pinstripes," according to Ron Bellamy of the Eugene REGISTER-GUARD. The team will have six different uniform combinations that "will allow the Ducks to do some mixing and matching but still offer a consistent 'look.'" Instead of solid black ink, the pinstripes on the home unis are comprised of the words to the UO fight song and coach George Horton's "mantra of 'three P's' -- 'present, process, positive.'" Horton: "For 32 years, I've been doing press conferences. ... Until I took this job, I never once answered a question of what our uniforms were going to look like. Since I've taken this position ... every single interview is, 'What are the uniforms going to look like?'" Bellamy reported the material used in the uniforms is 33% "lighter than traditional baseball uniforms, and the lightweight fabric is also extremely flexible." Details include improved venting, while long-sleeved undershirts "even include extra insulation for a pitcher's elbow." Some aspects of the uniforms are "still works in progress," including the caps. However, Bellamy noted "this being Oregon, there will, of course, be more than one cap." The school is reviving its baseball program this season after disbanding it 26 years ago (Eugene REGISTER-GUARD, 11/6).

MORE THAN WORDS: Horton said that the "first drawings he received from Nike were 'a little out there,' but he quickly realized the recruiting benefits." In Portland, Jeff Smith reported while Horton "wanted solid pinstripes, he agreed to let Nike try something new." UO SS Danny Pulfer: "Other teams have pinstripes, but they're not going to have Oregon pinstripes because Oregon pinstripes mean something and say something" (OREGONLIVE.com, 11/5).
