Players The Impetus Behind Redskins' All-Burgundy Uniforms

Redskins Players Requested
All-Burgundy Uniforms
While some fans may have been "put off by the burgundy-on-burgundy uniform scheme the Redskins debuted" during their "MNF" game against the Steelers, no player could be found "who disliked the experiment," according to Dan Steinberg of the WASHINGTON POST. Redskins CBs Fred Smoot and Carlos Rogers, RB Clinton Portis and FB Mike Sellers "were among the activists" for the uniforms, and Rogers said that they "took their case to the captains." Redskins coach Jim Zorn, who was lobbied about the idea: "I said 'Absolutely!' You know, maybe for fun, not for some big psych-up thing or psych-out thing. It was just a change of pace for these guys." Zorn also left "open the possibility of a return to burgundy" despite losing Monday night 23-6. Zorn: "I'm not superstitious. I'll let the players decide how they want to do that" (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 11/5). In DC, Cindy Boren participated in an online chat and wrote of the uniform combination, "I know what I like and it isn't burgundy on burgundy. (Especially when the tops and bottoms don't appear to match on the office TV.)" Monday was the first time in team history the club wore the combo, and Boren wrote, "You'd think after that effort, a last" (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 11/4).

STEELER INVASION: Also in DC, Michael Wilbon, who owns Redskins season tickets in the club section, writes Steelers fans "were everywhere" at Monday night's game, and they were "so loud they effectively drowned out Redskins fans." But what is "unique and beyond the control of fans is that a 90,000-seat stadium is 25,000 seats too many," as there is "no team or city in the league that should have a stadium with more than 70,000 seats." Meanwhile, Wilbon writes drunkenness "and the vile behavior it leads to is a problem" at many NFL games, and reports from Monday night was that the crowd's actions were "business as usual" (WASHINGTON POST, 11/6). The WASHINGTON POST's Boren wrote teams "often don't care" if opposing fans buy tickets "because they make money when tickets are resold [on] StubHub." But Monday night "was just terrible" (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 11/4). BLEACHER REPORT's Craig Garrison wrote under the header, "Shame On You Washington Redskins Fans!" Garrison: "Shame on you for allowing another team's fanbase to force your own team into a 'silent count' at times to deal with the amount of noise the opposing team's fans were making IN YOUR HOME STADIUM!" (BLEACHERREPORT.com, 11/5). Redskins OT Jon Jansen: "We've never had to go silent snap count at home." In DC, David Elfin noted Zorn "agreed it was unusual for the offensive players to have a hard time hearing the count in a non-shotgun situation at home" (WASHINGTON TIMES, 11/5).
