NHL's Collins Discusses Plans For Re-Launched League Web Site

NHL COO Collins Hopes Revamped
NHL.com Will Attract Tech-Savvy Fans
NHL COO John Collins sat down with Forbes National Editor Michael Ozanian for “SportsMoney” to discuss the re-launched NHL.com Web site. Collins said of the site, “We can be very aggressive in trying to surround our fans with ways to experience the game across various kinds of technology and distribution. We’re not as tied to broadcast television, or really even cable television. We respect them, but we really want to go after the fans who are more tech savvy in a more digital way.” He added the league “made a big push on subscriptions, so the Gamecenter live, and even e-commerce, is just a much more integrated experience.” He also believes the “bells and whistles that have been added, to say Gamecenter, make it a much more interesting view than say the TV coverage.” Collins said the league is focused on “developing a hockey marketplace in total,” and the NHL’s partnership with GSI Commerce “gives us a chance to (get) in there the e-commerce shopping experience into editorial, into the video.” When asked by Ozanian if team owners have recouped the money they put into the re-launch of NHL.com, Collins said, “We haven’t gone to the ownership and asked them to make a significant investment. This has all been incremental, off of the revenues that we can raise through subscriptions and e-commerce and advertising” (FORBES.com, 10/30).
