Steelers-Redskins "MNF" Draws Second-Largest Cable Aud Of Year

ESPN Earns 10.2 Cable Rating For
Steelers-Redskins "MNF" Game
Through 10 "MNF" telecasts, ESPN is averaging a 9.1 cable rating and 12.4 million viewers, up 5.8% and 11.0%, respectively, from an 8.6 rating and 11.2 million viewers through Week Nine last year. Monday's Steelers-Redskins telecast, which included halftime interviews with Presidential-elect Barack Obama and Republican nominee John McCain, earned a 10.2 cable rating and 14.2 million viewers, up 34.2% and 43.7%, respectively, from a 7.6 rating and 9.9 million viewers for Ravens-Steelers last year. The game also marked the second-largest cable TV audience of '08, behind the September 15 "MNF" Eagles-Cowboys game, which earned a 13.3 rating and 18.6 million viewers (THE DAILY). DAILY VARIETY's Rick Kissell reports ESPN earned a 5.8/15 rating and 14.21 million viewers in adults 18-49 for Steelers-Redskins, earning the net its ninth straight Monday night win in the demo (DAILY VARIETY, 11/5).

HERE COMES THE BOOM: In DC, Leonard Shapiro wrote ESPN's Chris Berman, who conducted the interviews with Obama and McCain, deserves "full credit ... for a job well done." Berman "asked some really smart, legitimate questions during his edited satellite chats with both candidates," though we will "never know what stayed on the cutting room floor." Shapiro: "Perhaps Monday night might also represent a turning point in Berman's own career."  He "actually looked the part of a legitimate news anchor and got at least one provocative, news-making answer out of the session," referring to Obama's desire for an eight-team college football playoff (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 11/4).

FEELING FOXY: DAILY VARIETY's Kissell reports Fox, "riding the conclusion of the World Series" last Wednesday, led all broadcast nets in adults 18-49 in primetime for the second straight week for the week ended November 2. The conclusion of Phillies-Rays World Series Game Five on Wednesday earned a 6.2/16 rating and 19.84 million viewers in the demo, tying as the week's top-rated primetime program with Fox' "The Simpsons" and NBC's Patriots-Colts "Sunday Night Football." The World Series conclusion ranked No. 1 outright in total viewers. The net also "benefited from the end" of Sunday's Cowboys-Giants game, which drew "more viewers than any primetime program for the week" in the demo, with 23.3 million (DAILY VARIETY, 11/5).
