Hockey Canada, COC Squabble Over New Olympic Hockey Logo

Following the announcement that Hockey Canada's Maple Leaf logo will be removed from Canada's Olympic hockey jerseys per IOC rules, the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and Hockey Canada are both "jostling for position in a melee of rights and brands and logos," according to Christie & Maki of the GLOBE & MAIL. With "millions of dollars in merchandising at stake," the rights involved in a redesign of the jersey's logo "could bring about a showdown between Hockey Canada and the COC." But a source insisted that the COC "has the authority to have its logo on Hockey Canada's 2010 sweater and is pushing for that to happen." That "could mean a portion of the revenue generated by the sale of new Team Canada jerseys would flow back to the COC through" VANOC, which has the marketing rights to a COC logo for the Olympics. Hockey Canada President Bob Nicholson: "If the COC tells us we have to put their logo on our jersey, I'll now understand why they asked us to change our logo." COC Exec Dir of Marketing & Communications David Bedford said that Hockey Canada "might seek a new logo, but if it's trademarked by Hockey Canada, that, too, would be against the IOC's rules." Hockey Canada added that the COC "has backed its successful request for an exemption in the past, but won't this time around" for the hockey jerseys. Christie & Maki note the only body "that can ask the IOC for the exemption" is the IIHF (GLOBE & MAIL, 11/5).

MAPLE LEAVES: Coyotes Managing Partner & coach Wayne Gretzky said, "Kids grow up dreaming of wearing that jersey, putting that jersey on, wearing that logo. ... So I hope there's a way they can figure out [how] to make it work, so Canada and the other teams get to wear their logos. It's a tradition our country's very proud of and it would be a shame that they're not allowed to ... wear that jersey." Coyotes and Canada D Ed Jovanovski said, "I think it's an irrelevant thing (for the IOC to worry about). Why? It's been there for years" (CALGARY SUN, 11/5).
