Raptors Players, Coach Sam Mitchell Utilize
Mail-In Ballots To Vote In Presidential Election
In Toronto, Dave Feschuk reports an "anecdotal survey of the Raptors locker room suggests the vast majority" of Raptors players will vote in Tuesday's U.S. Presidential election through "mail-in ballots available to U.S. expatriates." Raptors C JERMAINE O'NEAL, G ANTHONY PARKER and coach SAM MITCHELL are "among a handful" of Raptors who said that they already have voted for Democratic Presidential candidate BARACK OBAMA. Raptors F CHRIS BOSH "will not divulge for whom he cast his ballot" (TORONTO STAR, 10/31). Meanwhile, Bills QB TRENT EDWARDS said, "I'm voting for Barack." But Jets coach ERIC MANGINI said, "My dad used to say, you shouldn't really talk about politics and religion." NHL Rangers C BRANDON DUBINSKY, who is from Alaska, "didn't want to address" Republican Vice Presidential candidate SARAH PALIN's politics. Dubinsky: "It's a very heated topic, and people have a lot of different opinions about it. ... I don't really want to go there" (Westchester JOURNAL NEWS, 10/31). Among 45 players on the Redskins' roster, 29 indicated they are voting for Obama, eight are voting for Republican Presidential candidate JOHN MCCAIN and seven are undecided. Redskins S LARON LANDRY would not disclose his preference, saying only, "[Redskins coach] JIM ZORN for president, baby" (WASHINGTON POST, 10/31). Bears coach LOVIE SMITH: "I'm a strong supporter of Barack Obama. I've already voted" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 10/31). In Orlando, Tania Ganguli writes for NASCAR drivers, if they have "strong political beliefs, it just doesn't make sense to air them out. Image is important in the marketing-heavy world of NASCAR" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 10/31).

BOOK SHELF: The WALL STREET JOURNAL's Pete Hausler reviewed "A RACE LIKE NO OTHER: 26.2 MILES THROUGH THE STREETS OF NEW YORK," by N.Y. Times sportswriter LIZ ROBBINS. Robbins offers a "broad and loving look of the 39-year-old event through the prism of the 2007 race," and the book "so seamlessly interweaves the micro and macro stories of the New York marathon that it may require two reads to catch every amusing detail" (WSJ.com, 10/29). SI's Kostya Kennedy writes Robbins' method "can feel forced, and the book sometimes falls victim to Robbins's determination to show the outer edges of her reporting." However, the book "gets closer to this marathon than an avenue railbird, and it leaves impressions not fleeting, but lasting" (SI, 11/3 issue). See today's interview with Robbins for more about her book.
