Giants/Jets Stadium Cost Up, But Construction Ahead Of Schedule

Johnson Reveals Stadium Cost Hike, Feels
Naming Rights Are "Most Enticing" In The World
Jets Owner Woody Johnson and Giants President & CEO John Mara said that the cost of the teams' new Meadowlands stadium "will be about" $1.6B, up from a $1.3B estimate last year, according to Joe Lapointe of the N.Y. TIMES. Meadowlands Stadium Co. President & CEO Mark Lamping said that the stadium is "55[%] complete, ... ahead of schedule for its 2010 opening." Lapointe notes the stadium will be "surrounded by a fenced-in security perimeter 100 feet to 150 feet wide," and stadium architect George Heinlein said that the "bottom of the exterior walls will be blast-resistant." Heinlein and Lamping said that the secured perimeter "will double as a plaza for ticketed fans." The stadium "will have 82,500 seats rising high on all four sides," and Heinlein said that "although the top rows will be 30 feet farther from the field than in the current 80,242-seat stadium, ... they will not be as distant as the highest seats in other new stadiums with smaller capacities." Heinlein added that the stadium "will have 'a very steep lower bowl.'" Heinlein also said that the problem that causes newer stadiums to be quickly renovated is luxury boxes, "which do not sell as well as predicted." Heinlein: "My gut is telling me we're going to have to try to figure out a way to give the buildings back to the fans." Meanwhile, Johnson said that "he did not think" the controversy over the failed stadium naming rights discussions with Germany-based insurance and financial services company Allianz "would affect the market for naming rights" in N.Y. Johnson: "It is probably the most enticing media-rights opportunity that exists anywhere" (N.Y. TIMES, 10/31).
