National City Remains As Pistons Sponsor Despite PNC Takeover
By Erik Swanson, Staff Writer
Cleveland-based National City bank will remain as presenting sponsor of the Pistons' season despite Friday’s announcement that Pittsburgh-based PNC Financial Services Group will acquire the bank in a deal exceeding $5B. Pistons Exec VP/Corporate Marketing Dan Hauser said he does not expect the impending acquisition, which likely will not be finalized until the end of the year, to have any effect on the sponsorship this year. Hauser said the team already has begun incorporating National City in TV, radio and print advertising efforts, as well as signage at the Palace of Auburn Hills, and there are no plans to delay or cancel any components of the deal. “The presenting sponsorship is in full motion now,” Hauser said. “It’s business as usual.” Hauser could not confirm whether the sponsorship would continue once the PNC deal is complete. “I would think so. ... I’m sure at the appropriate time they’ll let us know what their plans are.” The Pistons and National City agreed to the multi-year sponsorship deal earlier this month after previous presenting sponsor Rock Financial withdrew in August. In addition to inclusion in advertising and arena signage, the deal calls for the National City logo to appear on Pistons tickets, pocket schedules, staff uniforms and the Pistons.com Web site. PNC was not available for comment before presstime.
