USA Hockey yesterday formally announced that HSBC Arena and Niagara Univ.'s Dwyer Arena will host the 2011 World Junior Championships for 10 days starting December 26, 2010 (BUFFALO NEWS, 10/28).

CANADA SPORTS HOF: The GLOBE & MAIL's Allan Maki reports Canada Sports HOF Dirs yesterday "selected Calgary's bid over one from Toronto" to be the new home for the HOF, then "announced plans to raise $30[M] for the Hall's construction and $20[M] to help operate it." The $20M "will be placed in an endowment fund and used to offset annual maintenance costs." Calgary's bid for the Sports HOF "included two key components": that the Calgary Olympic Delivery Authority "donated the land for the Hall's location; and that it will [be] included at Olympic Park, an established tourist attraction and athlete training base." Maki notes 58 letters from "corporations and CEOs endorsed Calgary as the best choice for the Hall," and the endorsements "might lead to financial contributions" (GLOBE & MAIL, 10/29).

CHECKMATE: CHARLOTTE BUSINESS JOURNAL's Erik Spanberg reports ECHL Charlotte Checkers Owner Michael Kahn "wants at least a three-year [lease] deal starting next season" with Time Warner Cable Arena. But the Bobcats, who operate the arena, "are happy with the existing arrangement." Bobcats President & COO Fred Whitfield said that the Checkers "don't produce enough revenue to justify a long-term lease." Last season, the Checkers "ranked third among 23 [ECHL] teams in attendance, attracting an average of 5,978 fans per game" (CHARLOTTE BUSINESS JOURNAL, 10/24 issue).
