NBA Selling Online Package As Stand-Alone Product For First Time

 
NBA Digital this week will begin selling NBA League Pass, its out-of-market game package, as a stand-alone broadband product. Online access to the out-of-market games had previously been offered only as an additional component to purchasers of the TV version of NBA League Pass. That offer will continue, with pricing for both beginning at $169. But the broadband version will now be sold separately as well with pricing beginning at $84.95. “NBA Digital is committed to providing fans with the most innovative and comprehensive coverage of the game they love by offering more options to follow their favorite teams and players throughout the season,” said NBA Digital Senior VP & GM Bryan Perez. NBA League Pass Broadband this year also comes with a mosaic feature, developed by NBA Digital and IBM, that will allow viewing of multiple games. Free previews for both the TV and online version of NBA League Pass are currently available with closing dates undetermined for those teaser offerings (Eric Fisher, SportsBusiness Journal).

JOINING A NEW TEAM: SBJ's Fisher profiles NBA Digital's new operations under Turner Sports, and notes fans can "vote on which game NBA TV shows on its upcoming schedule," which is a "perfect example of the innovation and immediacy" Perez plans to bring to the operation. Perez: "It gets to what we want to be about: a place where we're continuing to push the cross-platform element, engage fans, address their needs and really bring our collective resources to bear." Perez, who was hired in July after serving as Live Nation Global Digital CEO, "maintains daily contact with NBA officials," but "remains able to position content as he and his group sees fit without direct league involvement." NBA Deputy Commissioner & COO Adam Silver: "Bryan and his staff will have the ability to cover the league on stories as they see fit" (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 10/27 issue). In Atlanta, Kristi Swartz noted NBA TV on Wednesdays this season "will air original programming such as a commentators roundtable and news features," while Thursday nights will be "Legends Night," which will feature "historic games, players or a team's rise to fame." Perez: "We want to increase the amount of viewership on NBA TV, that's why we moved to start 'theme nights'" (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 10/28).
