Mariners Oppose Proposal For Strip Club Near Safeco Field

Mariners Ask City Of Seattle To Deny Strip
Club From Opening Near Ballpark
The Mariners are asking the city of Seattle's Department of Planning & Development to deny Deja Vu Showgirls Owner Roger Forbes a permit to "open a strip club down the street" from Safeco Field, according to Kathy Mulady of the SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER. A Mariners attorney said that Safeco Field is a "place where children gather and should fall under the category protected by city rules from having strip clubs as neighbors." The city's restrictions on where strip clubs can be located include "800 feet away from schools, public parks, community centers and open space, and away from adult-only entertainment." The team's attorneys said that the ballpark is "like a park or gathering place for children." Mariners Dir of Public Information Rebecca Hale: "This has more to do with the proximity rather than the existence of the business itself. The city is obviously concerned about locating these businesses near public gathering places and schools. We have tens of thousands of students here on game days." Seattle Department of Planning & Development spokesperson Bryan Stevens said that there is "no deadline for making the decision." The plans for the project have been returned to Deja Vu to "make corrections, and when they come back to the city the review will continue" (SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER, 10/29).
