Greg Miller Begins First Season In Charge Of Jazz Organization

The Jazz' season-opener tonight against the Nuggets at EnergySolutions Arena will "mark the start of the first season" with Larry H. Miller Group of Companies CEO Greg Miller in charge, according to Doug Robinson of the DESERET NEWS. The change "might be little noted" if Greg Miller's father, Jazz Owner Larry Miller, "wasn't one of the most visible, popular owners in the NBA." Larry Miller, who relinquished day-to-day operations of the club for health issues, has been involved "intimately with the Jazz since risking everything to buy them and prevent their exit from Utah more than 20 years ago." Larry Miller "has his own locker in the player locker room and is an ever-present figure in his court-side seat." He "occasionally scolds his players in the post-game and halftime locker room for lackluster performances." Greg Miller: "That's been my dad's style, and ... my dad and I are different." But Robinson notes Miller's ascension to CEO "will bring few, if any, noticeable changes." Greg Miller "has spent the last couple of months educating himself about the basketball business," and has "discussed basketball matters" with his father, Jazz Exec VP, CFO & Assistant GM Bob Hyde and Jazz President Randy Rigby. And while Greg Miller is "considerably less visible on the Jazz scene than his father," he "has attended nearly every home game for 23 years, and he has traveled to see the team perform in the playoffs and occasional regular-season road games" (DESERET NEWS, 10/29).

EnergySolutions Arena Featuring New Lighting,
Sound Systems This Season
JAZZED UP: In Salt Lake City, Ross Siler reports during player introductions tonight, the Jazz, in featuring their new lighting and sound system at EnergySolutions Arena, "will turn out every light in the arena, including advertising signs, and pause for 10 to 15 seconds for fans to appreciate the moment." The intros include "handing out glowsticks to every fan and rolling out a court-sized flag for the national anthem," as well as "two bursts of fireworks and enough streamers to fill 100 cannons." Rigby said that the cost to install the 120 new lights and 52 new speakers at the arena "was more than $1[M]." Rigby said that the Jazz "expect tonight's game to sell out" (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 10/29). Larry H. Miller Sports & Entertainment Senior VP/Facilities Scott Williams said that it was the right time for a new sound system "because the arena just installed a new lighting system." In Utah, Scott Iwasaki reports the sound system from Electro-Voice features a "total of 30 speakers and 29 amplifiers that put out 100,000 watts" (DESERET NEWS, 10/29).
