ACC To Propose Earlier Deadline For Players' NBA Draft Decisions

Williams Supports Legislation Forcing
Men's Basketball Players To Declare Earlier
The ACC "plans to propose NCAA legislation that would force men's basketball underclassmen to decide whether they are in the NBA Draft within 10 days after the NCAA title game," according to Robbi Pickeral of the Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER. ACC officials are "considering submitting the proposal in time" for an NCAA BOD meeting Thursday. The officials said that if they wait, they "will propose the idea next July." ACC Associate Commissioner for Basketball Operations Karl Hicks said under the proposal "there would be no grace period -- either you're in or you're out." Hicks: "We feel that's what would work best for the student-athletes and that's what would work best for the coaches." Univ. of North Carolina men's basketball coach Roy Williams "supports the legislation, pointing to the fact that college football players have only 72 hours to decide whether to turn pro early." Williams: "If you give somebody forever to make a decision, they're going to take forever. And it leaves your programs in limbo, it leaves your current players in limbo." Pickeral noted under current NBA rules, underclassmen this year "had until April 27 to submit their names for the draft," and if they "didn't hire agents, they had until June 16 to withdraw" (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER, 10/27). In Greensboro, Rob Daniels reported if the proposal is "enacted in the current legislative cycle, the policy would likely go into effect for the 2010 NBA draft; it would supersede any NBA action; and it would drastically shorten a tryout process that often consumes April and May for players of uncertain professional standing." ACC Commissioner John Swofford: "I think there's a pretty good show of support there from other conferences on this issue, and we intend to move it forward" (Greensboro NEWS & RECORD, 10/27).
